Music (That) Matters: Introduction

To commemorate the 2017 World Music Day, Goethe-Institut Nigeria organised a Music Documentary Weekend (June 9 and 10), programming three documentary films about music as an unrelenting force in the face of oppression.

As a component to the film programme, the Institut requested articles from renowned journalists and music industry professionals with regard to the working theme ‘Music (that) Matters’. This series is aimed at documenting personal memories and social histories relating to the power of music.

Within this topic, the five writers – from Nigeria and Germany – contributed six articles spanning personal encounters with music as well as general commentary on music’s ability to transcend borders, politics and personalities. Through the articles in this series, published in partnership with Nsibidi Institute, we join the writers as they discover and uncover old and new musicians as well as diverse musical genres both in Nigeria and abroad.

Contributors: Akintayo Abodunrin, Pelu Awofeso, Tam Fiofori, Okwei Odili, and Florian Sievers.
